"Men nearly always follow the tracks made by others and proceed in their affairs by imitation, even though they cannot entirely keep to the tracks of others or emulate the prowess of their models. So a prudent man should always follow in the footsteps of great men and imitate those who have been outstanding. If his own prowess fails to compare with theirs, at least it has an air of greatness about it. He should behave like those archers who, if they are skilful, when the target seems too distant, know the capabilities of their bow and aim a good deal higher than their objective, not in order to shoot so high but so that by aiming high they can reach the target." - Niccolo Machiavelli

"I bear solemn witness to the fact that NATO heads of state and of government meet only to go through the tedious motions of reading speeches, drafted by others, with the principal objective of not rocking the boat." - Pierre Elliott Trudeau

"In teaching man, experimental science results in lessening his pride more and more by proving to him every day that primary causes, like the objective reality of things, will be hidden from him forever and that he can only know relations" - Claude Bernard

"Saying that a great genius is mad, while at the same time recognizing his artistic worth, is like saying that he had rheumatism or suffered from diabetes. Madness, in fact, is a medical term that can claim no more notice from the objective critic than he grants the charge of heresy raised by the theologian, or the charge of immorality raised by the police." - James Joyce

"Chasing an objective, stretching for a goal needs to be mitigated with recognition there are no guarantees anything today or tomorrow will be in any way like yesterday shocks us now and again - headline shock - then we wiggle back into our comfortable seats of familiarity." - Mark Kolke

"The fundamental problem with golf is that every so often, no matter how lacking you may be in the essential virtues required of a steady player, the odds are that one day you will hit the ball straight, hard, and out of sight. This is the essential frustration of this excruciating sport. For when you've done it once, you make the fundamental error of asking yourself why you can't do this all the time. The answer to this question is simple: the first time was a fluke." -Colin Bowles

"As you walk down the fairway of life you must smell the roses, for you only get to play one round." -Ben Hogan

"Putts get real difficult the day they hand out the money." -Lee Trevino

"There are three ways of learning golf: by study, which is the most wearisome; by imitation, which is the most fallacious; and by experience, which is the most bitter." -Robert Browning

"They say 'practice makes perfect.' Of course, it doesn't. For the vast majority of golfers it merely consolidates imperfection." - Henry Longhurst

"I simply do not understand someone who hits a ball that lands behind a tree and can look at it and say 'well, that's golf''." - Simon Hobay

COMMENTARY, rants + reader feedback . .

+ the election campaign is half done, Stelmach will hold a majority, the PC party will have had a good scare, Liberals will realize that Taft is not going to ever get them into government, Mason will buy a suit that fits; urban rural balance will, for that last time ever, rule Alberta as upcoming re-drawing of boundaries will put the seats where the votes are, so Calgary-Edmonton & mid size cities will call the tune like never before; too soon to call the biggest blunders of the campaign because they are likely still ahead; good-bye scud- stud Arthur Kent who clearly could not play for anyone's team - yes, Arthur politics is a blood-sport, but it is firstly a team sport . . as you've noticed, there is no KENT in team

+ looking around & looking south it is difficult to believe the politicians, bankers & Wall Street types who say the U.S,. will avoid recession let alone ignore the obvious result which will be significant impacts on Canada; what galls me is the Harper government, Mr. Flaherty in particular, failing to notice reality as it encircles him. Our dollar, soaring, does us little good that way. Our goods are not competitive on world markets, our resources are not competitive & our productivity continues to lag. Mr. Harper seems so focused on out-gaming Mr. Dion in arranging an election that his government is looking less right every day . . so smarten up Stephen, it is time for a new finance minister, a new look at our fiscal situation; while there is little risk you'll be overrun by Liberals as long as Stephane Dion leads them, don't get too comfortable . .
