QUOTES on life, real estate & golf . . .

"It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade." - Charles Dickens

"If we are always arriving and departing, it is also true that we are eternally anchored. One's destination is never a place but rather a new way of looking at things." - Henry Miller

"It has never been, and never will be easy work! But the road that is built in hope is more pleasant to the traveler than the road built in despair, even though they both lead to the same destination." - Marion Zimmer Bradley

"A snowdrift is a beautiful thing - if it doesn't lie across the path you have to shovel or block the road that leads to your destination." - Hal Borland

"Booksellers are the most valuable destination for the lonely, given the numbers of books that were written because authors couldn't find anyone to talk to." - Alain de Botton

"We stand now where two roads diverge. But unlike the roads in Robert Frost's familiar poem, they are not equally fair. The road we have long been traveling is deceptively easy, a smooth superhighway on which we progress with great speed, but at its end lies disaster. The other fork of the road / the one less traveled by / offers our last, our only chance to reach a destination that assures the preservation of the earth." - Rachel Carson

"The road leading to a goal does not separate you from the destination; it is essentially a part of it." - Charles de Lint

"My destination is not a place or places or many places - it is a province of peace, a state of mind, of being found and found out and where we are is right here right now and nothing else matters anywhere close to this anywhere in life in any place (mind you, everything's nicer in Maui)." - Mark Kolke

"When the ducks are walking, you know it is too windy to be playing golf." - Dave Stockton

"The difference between a sand trap and water hazard is the difference between a car crash and an airplaine crash. You have a chance of recovering from a car crash." - Bobby Jones

COMMENTARY, rants + argument

+ three cheers for the little guys; it seems the Asset Backed Commercial Paper 'solution' has new players at the table because small investors get an equal vote along with institutional investors notwithstanding the great disparity in their investment amounts; the little guys are more than squeaky wheels, they are articulate, fair-minded & holding some feet to the fire which should, if nothing else, provide some education for everyone as to how this mess got out of control . . stay tuned

+ Calgarians & culture - it's a strange notion, but there is some evidence the Junos were a success (while I enjoy Russell Peters comedy, I fail to understand why Jebb Fink from Calgary was not chosen to host the event] & now that playoff hockey (that's the time of year when 'between periods' means time to move the lawn sprinkler) is upon us, the Red Mile will get a workout . .

+ I find the U.S. recession watch (+ ours in Ontario) as a curious mess of bumbling regulators & government folk being misinterpreted by journalists who simply don't get it; case in point, stocks are up this morning on hype about Washington Mutual getting US$5 billion in new capital - while I find their write-offs of US$3.1 billion because of their lending practices the scary thing because those chickens haven't all come home to roost yet; sooner, as opposed to later, one of these large U.S. or European institutions will fail to find rescue capital - then we'll see dominoes tumble with great opportunities for bargain hunters. Meanwhile, Ontario will continue to bleed in a slow leak . .
